Welcome to Spanish I at Placerita Jr High! This is a year-long, high-school level course which is designed for the beginning Spanish student. The course offers you a chance to receive one year of high school foreign language experience and therefore requires a great deal of time, effort, and responsibility. (Hopefully it will be great fun too!) The course will involve reading, writing, listening, and speaking beginning Spanish with a focus on vocabulary building and grammar. In addition, you will be introduced to the geography and culture of the various Spanish-speaking countries. The textbook for this class is Descubre: Level I, and is designed to prepare you for placement in second year Spanish next year. In order to be successful in this class, you must have a desire to learn Spanish, an excellent work ethic, and a willingness to participate fully in the class! Vamos a empezar- Let's begin!

11/7/19: Feliz jueves :) Continue to work on memorizing the family vocab for your quiz on Tuesday. Make flashcards, write the words out, whatever works to help you memorize. Also, three activities have been assigned on vhlcentral.com. They are on using adjectives. You have until Monday night to complete them- remember, this is a three-day weekend in honor of our Veterans who have served our country- if you are gone for the weekend then you might want to complete the activities before you leave. However, tomorrow in class we will continue to work on the describing adjectives, so if you want to wait until after that to do the vhlcentral, you might find that it will be easier after our practice in class. :)
1/5/19: Feliz martes :) For tonight, please practice for your Vocab Quiz on Family words. Tomorrow in class, be ready to show me what you did to practice- write a list of family members who fit each category, make family vocab flashcards, write each word out a few times, or do whatever you think will help you to memorize the vocab. 11/3/19: Feliz fin de semana (Happy weekend)- Your Dia de los Muertos skeleton is due on Tuesday. Can't wait to see them! Remember you can look online for ideas for designing him or her. 10/28/19: Feliz lunes (Happy Monday): Your Unit 2 test is on Thursday (yes, Halloween!)... Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will take a practice test to prepare. Know the vocab from Lista 2, how to conjugate AR verbs, ser vs. estar, gustar, etc. And numbers! To help you prepare, please complete all of p. 18 in your workbook and the last section of p. 19 (numbers) tonight. Gracias :)
10/22/19: Feliz martes (Happy Tuesday): For tonight, please write out the numbers 1 through 100 in Spanish! Yes, really! It should take about 10 minutes. When you return to class tomorrow (per 6) or Thursday (per 5), we will continue working on our stories and our autobiography. We are wrapping up Ch. 2! (Yes, that means the unit test is sometime in the near future!) :)

Know the 30 Regular AR verbs (From Lista 2) and how to conjugate them. Also, be sure you are caught up with all activities and tutorials on vhlcentral.com. Last, be sure to print (double-spaced) the rough draft of your Cuento (story) from p. 54 in the text to hand in to me tomorrow :)

Next, continue to work on a) memorizing the AR infinitives and b) learning how to conjugate them correctly. 10/10/19: Feliz jueves (Happy Thursday)- For tonight, please continue studying for your AR Infinitive Quiz, which will take place on Monday. Look at the self-assessment you did in your spiral today, and continue to practice learning the infinitives that you don't yet have memorized. Tomorrow in class we will talk about the lesson on "Forming Questions in Spanish" which is in the text on pages 55 and 56. (If you are on the field trip or absent tomorrow, please read those pages this weekend.) Afterwards, we will continue working on our stories. Yes, there will be time after the quiz on Monday for the field trip kids to finish their stories, so you do not need to work on them over the weekend. :) Also, be sure to watch the tutorial on "Estar" on vhlcentral.com no later than Sunday night. 10/8/19: Feliz martes (Happy Tuesday): Three activities have been assigned on vhlcentral.com. They are due tomorrow night before bed, so you can do those either tonight or tomorrow night. Also, our next quiz is our infinitive quiz which will be next Monday, Oct. 14th. Our last assessment before 2nd quarter will be our conjugation quiz, and that will take place on either the 17th or 18th. So step one is to memorize the regular AR verbs on p. 2 of your vocab list; then, work on learning to conjugate them! :)
10/3/19: Feliz jueves :) (Happy Thursday) - Workbooks will be collected tomorrow (Friday)- be sure you have completed p. 11, section 1, and all of pp. 12 and 13 (p. 13 is practicing using AR verbs). Also, one activity and one tutorial has been assigned on vhlcentral.com for completion no later than Monday night. The activity is practicing AR verbs and the tutorial is on forming questions in Spanish. If you were absent today, you can make up your quiz tomorrow (Friday) right after school. If that doesn't work for you, please let me know. Next, begin working on memorizing the INFINITIVES from Vocab List p. 2 (beginning with "BAILAR" through "VIAJAR". :) Our next quiz will be 20 of those!

Also, there are two activities to complete and a tutorial to watch (on Regular AR verbs) on vhlcentral.com. Please be sure to complete those by tomorrow night (Thursday). 9/19/19: Feliz jueves (Happy Thursday): Tomorrow is your Unit 1 Test! Walk through the text, your spiral notes/activities, handouts related to Chapter 1, and of course, your workbook! Some of you might want to re-read the sections on nouns and articles in your text (pp. 12-14), the lesson on "ser" (pp. 19-21) , as well as the section on telling time (pp. 24-25). Also, be sure you have completed the activities on vhlcentral.com. There were three activities assigned that were due Wednesday (not 4), and so if you forgot to do those, late is better than never! On tomorrow's test, you will receive partial credit on the sentences you write, so just do your best! Muy buena suerte (Good Luck) :)

They should take about 20 minutes to complete and are practicing using "ser" and telling time in Spanish. Our Unit 1 Test is this Friday- Hay que estudiar mucho (You need to study a lot!) :)

9/5/19: Feliz jueves (Happy Thursday!) For tonight, please be sure to log into your account at vhlcentral.com and complete the four activities. It is best to try to do so in one sitting (at a laptop or desktop, not on a phone or ipad please). It should take about 20 minutes. If you have trouble with logging in, please plan to stay after school tomorrow (Friday) and we will look at your account together. In addition, please continue to memorize the nouns and countries from page 2 of your vocab list, as well as be able to write the numbers from 1 to 20 (page 3). 9/3/19: Feliz martes (Happy Tuesday): Hope you had a wonderful weekend. Please continue working on memorizing the Spanish names of the countries that speak Spanish, the nouns (both are on p. 2 of your vocab list), and be able to write the numbers in Spanish from 1 to 20 (vocab list p. 3). Those will be the topics on the next vocab quiz!
8/29/19: Feliz jueves (Happy Thursday): Tonight you should begin working on memorizing the next set of vocab (page 2 of Lista 1). Focus on learning the country names in Spanish (especially the ones that are different than they are in English), and the nouns (sustantivos) in the right column of Lista 1, p. 2. When you memorize a noun, you have to memorize the article that goes with it- for example, el cuaderno (the notebook). Tomorrow we will watch the Fotonovela (from pp. 6 and 7 in your text), and we will answer some comprehension questions about it. Que tengan un dia maravilloso- have a marvelous day! :)

8/26/19: Feliz lunes (Happy Monday): Continue to prepare for your first Vocab Quiz on THURSDAY. It will cover all of the vocab from Page 1 of your Vocab List. The best way to learn it is to WRITE, WRITE, WRITE in Spanish! Making flashcards is helpful also. We will continue working on our pairs dialogue in class tomorrow (Tuesday). :)

Be ready to write the saludos (greetings), despedidas (goodbyes), ways to ask "How are you?" and give appropriate answers, and the expresiones de cortesia (expressions of courtesy) from Vocab List 1. 8/19/19: Feliz lunes (Happy Monday!)- This week we begin to learn to write in Spanish! We will be doing some in-class writing assignments and will get our workbooks to use for homework. In addition, please begin/continue memorizing the following: Your mini- autobiography, the numbers from 1 to 20, and the first four sections of your Ch. 1 Vocab list (Greetings, Goodbyes, "How are You?", and Expressions of Courtesy). Our first vocab quiz will come from those four sections on the Vocab List. If you work on memorizing/writing all of these for 15-20 minutes daily, you will find this to be a manageable task! 8/14/19: Hola clase- Happy second day of school! Hope it was a great day! For tonight, please make sure you have your spiral, folder, and any other supplies you would like for Spanish class. Also, please ask your parents to go over the class guidelines with you, and then please have them sign and return the half sheet given in class today. :) Tell them what you have learned in class so far- how to say what your name is, how old you are, and what you are like. They will be impressed!
8/13/19- Hola clase- Bienvenidos (hello class- welcome!) I hope you have had a great first day of school! I am looking forward to working with all of you this year! For tonight, please be sure to get a college-ruled spiral notebook for notes and class practice, as well as a folder to hold handouts for each unit.
